 DADA Teaching Interview
« Thread Started on Feb 8, 2009, 1:36pm »

Michael walked through the halls of the quiet school at his own pace. He never really worried about walking fast or slow. He just walked along at a pace that was set of his own will. He glanced around through the halls remembering what they had looked like when he had been there. It had been a long time yet the school looked exactly the same. What an odd feeling that the school had not changed at all.

He made his way toward the Headmaster office. He had come back to the school to apply for a job as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. He had returned to the school to teach the children what he had learned through his years. He knew the students would think him to be a hard head, stubborn, and sometimes assume he was just mental, but if he got the job he would teach them all that he could.

He approached a door that he knew to be the Headmaster's office. He lifted the cane up into the air. He hit the door with the cain in a rhythmic beat. He knew it was an annoying thing to do but he didn't care. He would knock till he got an answer. He lifted the wooden cane off the door again, then letting it fall to hit against the door. He waited for a response of some sort to come out from the room saying for him to come in.

The Headmistress was looking forward to the day ahead. There had been a major upheavel at the school lately and they had the terminate the employment of several teachers. It broke her heart to have to let them go, but given the circumstances she did not have a choice. She had three interviews scheduled for that morning alone, but was optimistic.

She had looked over the resumes sitting on her desk several times, but a sheet of paper riddled with accomplishments didn't tell her who the people were behind the scenes. Michael Deforsh was due to her office any time and though it had been ages and he was a few years younger than her, she was glad to see a former classmate working his way up the ranks.

She heard a rap at the door and wondered if that was Mike. She took a quick sip from her strong columbian blend and then rose and circled her desk to open the door for the hopeful. She smiled warmly at Mr. Deforsh and showed him to the seat that was right in front of her desk. The room was flooded with light from the easternly sun so she pulled the heavy curtins closed to shut out the light. She didn't want Michael to feel uncomfortable with the sun shining in his eyes.

She returned to the clunky cherry desk that she detested, hitting her knee as she got herself settled. She stiffled a yelp and took another long sip from her coffee to swallow down the lump in her throat. She cleared her throat and laughed at herself for a moment and then said, "Michael, it is so good to see you. It has been ages. I see you are interviewing for the DADA position and I am delighted. Why don't we go ahead and get started? What do you feel you sets you apart from the rest?"

He was ready to rap again on the door, still following his rhythmic pattern when he heard shuffling from the other side of the door. He stopped the cane in mid-swing before it made contact with the door again. He listened closely. He heard a squeak as someone turned the doorknob to open it. He pulled on the cane forcing it back away from the door. He held it straight up and down before releasing enough pressure against it that the shaft rushed down through his hand. With a slight thud the cane hit the ground assuming its position under Michael's hand.

The door swung open to reveal a warm smile that welcomed him into the room. He looked her once over taking everything in. He followed the woman into the office. He looked at the chair, sitting in the middle of the room. He made his way to the chair, lurching a bit with every step from the limp he carried with him like a bag he could never take off. He sat down in the chair, setting the wooden support of his next to the chair.

He heard the woman speak of it being ages. He was not there for the trivialities of catching up on the old times. He could do that during his free time once he had established a job and settled into the school.

"What sets me apart from the rest of the people you might interview is that I'm here to teach these students real life skills on protecting themselves from the Dark Arts. I'm not here to teach them a few small spells that they'll never learn to use, I'm here to teach them the way real Dark Arts acts. I plan to test their knowledge and abilities everyday. I can teach these students everything they'll need to know to protect themselves."

He finished his short speech. He wasn't scared to boast about his own abilities, but he did want this job so he could teach the students to be prepared.

With the war looming in Greens, teaching student to defend themselves was of the up-most importance and as usual Mike got straight to the point. She wondered what happened to him to cause such a serious injury to his leg, but felt it would be inappropriate to ask and would allow him to tell her if her wanted to. She felt awful for the man though, because it looked like he was pained with each step he took.

She smiled at his response and said, "I am glad to hear you say that Mr. Deforsh. I am not sure if you are aware of what is happening at Greens Academy, but it seems our students will need a teacher that doesn't beat around the bush and gets straight to the point. With a looming war on the horizon, I want to see the students that file out of those doors well prepared for what is to come. "

Sammy sighed deeply and then stood up and walked over to the coffee maker and poured herself a cup and then looked over at Michael and said, "I am interested to see how you will handle a classroom. We have some difficult students taking Defense Against the Dark Arts in our nine o'clock class. The previous professor had to be let go because she went quite mad after dealing with the group of miscreants." She walked back over and took a seat again in front of the scruffy man and then continued, "What tactics will you use when dealing with students who have a tendency to be ... difficult ... at best?"

"Yes, I have heard of what is going on at Green's Academy. It's a tragedy that so many have lost their lives to the war over there. This is why our young students need a Professor who will not let up, to teach them the lessons of life itself. "

Michael felt his heart rate rise a bit, feeling excitement at the idea. He then felt the anger. He felt it well up inside of him like a balloon ready to pop. His mind flashed back, remembering the dark figure that stood at the end of the alley. The spell shot at him again, he felt it hit his leg. He cringed with pain not realizing it was only a memory. The picture faded to reveal his feet and the bottom of the Headmistress' desk.

He was panting and sweating very hard. His whole body ached as though he had run a mile. His eyes were faded and inattentive. He looked down as though he were looking into a different galaxy. He looked back up to look at Ms. Rollins.

"Personally Ms. Rollins I would take care of them the old fashioned way. I would have them report to the front of the class in the middle of class and have them prove that they have the right to goof off in my class. They would be tested to see if they could actually do what I was teaching them."

He smiled bit. The tactic had always worked no matter who it was. He had always liked it. He planned to use it many times for it's use was never ending. He was no longed lost in his memories but fully aware of his current surroundings again.

Sammy smiled at Mr. Deforsh as he explained what tactics he would use to deal with trouble makers. Accountability was important for those who had certain disrespect for authority and sadly children were increasingly become more and more disrespectful towards authority figure heads. Most had it in their heads that they could do whatever they wanted simply because they would not be held accountable with the law and then once they reached that age of accountability, then it was too late. She had seen plenty of children go down a stead fast path towards imminent destruction and end up on the wrong side of the law because no one taught them it was wrong.

She cleared her throat and affirmed his statement, “I believe that is important …. and perhaps … being held accountable in front of the class with dissuade those children who persist in acting out. I find that when we are responsible for our actions … then we tend to think a bit harder before performing in an undesirable manner.”

She got up and refilled her coffee mug and poured a cup for Michael and set it in front of him before taking her seat again in her high back brown leather chair. She took a deep sighing breath before speaking again and then began again after her short pause.

“Mayor Horatio Daniels is taking a trip to Greens in England to get additional funding for the school for Defense Against the Dark Arts teaching. With this war looming in the foreseeable distance we just can’t take the risk in not having our students prepared. I think too many wizards and witches had become comfortable in the peace and failed to prepare themselves for another dark wizard to take up arms and try to achieve the goal where others failed. There is always someone with an evil agenda and it is up to the good people of the world to vanquish them by standing up for what is right. I do hope you will put as much emphasis on why we fight against the dark wizards as you do on how to fight them. I believe that is just as important.”

The Headmistress took a long drink from her steaming hot cup of coffee and waited for his reply.

Michael removed a small cloth from his pocket and wiped some sweat from his brow. He looked at the Headmistress saying,

"I'm glad to see who still agree with actual punishments for wrong behaviors. The old ways have seemed to die with this newest generation. Children no longer live by rules because their parents do not enforce the rules. Once they become adults they'll see the truth of it and realize that from then out, acting as they have been, they're basically in a sinking ship."

Michael used the metaphor in a very logical way. The generation today did have issues of putting themselves in their own sinking ship.By never learning discipline, most of the kids would find themselves in trouble later on in life.

Though he himself didn't mind if the newest generation ended up in jail, people would look back to him, wondering what he hadn't done to train them to be civilized.

"When isn't there evil lurking about looking to take off our heads? Evil has always been there. It makes no sense for people to act as though it isn't there. On a lighter note if we have more funding I am sure we could train our students to peak performance. I'll give them all detention everyday if I need to so I can train them as best as I can."

He hated to admit it but he rather spend his time training the students than free time to do whatever he wanted. He just found that getting stuff accomplished inside of a classroom seemed more useful than going on dates or having coffee with a colleague.

Sammy responded with a brief, ".... sinking ship is right ..." as she sipped her coffee and listened to Michael explain his tactics for dealing with problematic students. She hated to see any students fail, but it seemed that once the hull was damaged they were on a path for destruction to follow evil where it led. She saw more and more kids fall victim to the lure of evil and she hated to see it happen, but corruption surrounded them like a plague. Between the television, movies and video games alone it was enough to completely desensitize children and cause them to act out in a violent manner with out realizing the pain and suffering they caused and stripped of the capacity to give a darn.

Sammy smiled coyly at Deforsh when he mentioned keeping the students in for detention if he had to, just to teach them to defend themselves. She had a feeling this one would come up with very creative ways to teach the kids how to come to their own aid.

She smiled and took another sip from her coffee and then said, "I am pretty confident that we will get this funding. There is a greater need than ever for defending ourselves, especially with this new self proclaiming dark lord who wants to see genocide. It is so sad really. I spoke to Headmaster Derek Love over at Greens yesterday and he said the town has been on edge since he kidnapped Lily Potter. I guess everyone has been waiting for the other shoe to drop. I just hope it doesn’t infiltrate into Providence, but it Vladimir is anything like the dark lords of old, then recruiting young will be his mission.” She shook her head and swallowed hard at the thought.

“Well Michael, I have to say it was a pleasure meeting with you today.” She held her hand out to shake his and then continued, “I am prepared to offer you a two year contract at the start. Your salary will start at forty thousand. Once that is full filled you will have a review and the option to sign a five, ten or twenty year contract with a review each year. We have a full benefit program including all medical and dental, life insurance, all the standard wizarding holidays are paid and we have a 401k program that we will match upon renewing your contract.” She slid the contract over the man and continued, “Please read over the contract and return it to me signed and dated by Monday if you agree to take the job.”

Michael had been hearing news from the war but he had not decided what to think of them. His opinion stayed quiet and inside of him when she brought this up. he had not been thinking about it at all here late. His friend and old partner Karlis was in that area but he knew that the man could hold his own. Currently the war didn't concern him at all.

He reached the inside of his jacket, picking up the contract. He scanned through it hooking onto the important information. He knew the customary write up and had no need to read that part. The pen from his jacket slid over the black line at the bottom. The signature slowly rolled out followed with the date. He set it back on the desk. "All seems in order. There you go. As soon as you need me to start, we can."

He lifted from his chair. All was done here for the time being. "If that is all for now then I will make my exit. It was a pleasure." He put his hand out to her for a handshake. He forced a small smile to curl on his hard face.
