Eventually things would get back to normal and Petros couldn’t wait to feel relaxed. The angst and anxiety he had been carrying with him for the past few months was more than enough to kill the boy. There was a momentary loss that he had been trapped in. He no longer knew who he was or just what he was doing here anyway. He was suppose to question his existence at some point but for some reason questioning it now seemed a little odd, like he shouldn’t have to answer the bigger questions of life and existence just yet. He had been staring at the ceiling for a little over four hours now and was a little more than surprised he hadn’t gone cross eyed yet. Swinging his feet to the floor he got off the couch and made his way out to the cooler air. It was nice today it was hard to imagine that things had gone awry all over the world. The peaceful nature of the town was well for lack of a better word boring.
It was like nothing happened here, they were all living vicariously through the other bigger and faster moving cities. It all seemed unreal, or maybe he was just stuck in his own surreal mind making reality the unreality. Petros shook his head, it was all so confusing. He didn’t know who he was, what he was suppose to do and why. He was so lost and so stuck on his own head it was like no one else existed. He made his way to the hiking trail; this was an odd thing for him to do. Petros hated to do physical work as well as dirt. The one thing he liked about the trail had to be the trees and bushes he ran into. There was something peaceful about plants. They were not only self sustaining but they didn’t talk and they couldn’t tell you how much of a disappointment you were to them.
The trail was of course, muddy. Petros had forgotten about the rain, he was considering building an ark of some sort. With a sigh he kept walking, the birds were so cheery it made him queasy. Grumbling to himself as he walked up one of the low hills he paused at the top. A little out of breath, he needed to get back in shape. Well, get in shape, he placed his hands on his hips and took a deep breath and leaned against a tree. He needed to catch his breath.

Frustration… that is how Emma felt at the current moment as she had just gotten into a disagreement with her mother, whom she despised more than anything. The fight was completely pointless, something about Emma not following the rules or just turning to her father. But in all reality it all came down to appearance and money – how society viewed the McKinsey family on a daily basis. Most of the time Emma was fine with the social-light experience and milked it for what it was worth, but other times she became so aggravated with it that she would find ways of rebelling just to tick her mother off. Her father really did not care what his daughter was up to as long as she did what se was told when asked; however when he got bad, the world appeared to be hit by an atomic bomb as all hell would break loose. And when she could not rant to her father about her mother, Emma’s brothers were surely out of the question as they would use it against her somehow, she would often try and seek comfort in her secret boyfriend Maddox.
Maddox was the boy from the wrong side of the tracks for all intensive purposes. He was the good kid that all the professors like, the kind that would excel in his life and probably become a protector of the law following in the power of good. Emma’s family came from the opposite bloodline. They were the kind that had always caused trouble and worked underground. Their relationship was strictly forbidden from both ends, but that is what Emma loved about the entire thing. A little bit of danger made life exciting, and not to mention, he made her happy, which is an emotion that she would have never imagined developing from Maddox.
Unfortunately with summer being at hand and classes out for the vacation period, time with Maddox was a minimal, almost non-existent and Emma was dying on the inside. Sometimes they tried to meet with one another secretly where they first met, but those times were far and few between. That is why Emma had taken up making an excuse about shopping just so that she could go and walk along the trails near the school wishing to come across Maddox by accident, despite the weather.
The fight had driven her outside, just leaving with a slam of the door without any notice as to where she was heading. Wearing a causal outfit, which was more on the grunge side for Emma as she was a self proclaimed fashionista, Emma walked around, mumbling under her breath her hatred. A noise from her left, just a few yards away from her caused Emma to stop suddenly, holding her breath silently praying that Maddox was near her. Climbing up the hill quickly, Emma reached the top within just a few moments and instead of finding her love, she was greeted by her amazing friend Petros. Happy with the outcome, Emma ran over to him, hugging him tightly from behind. “Petros! I have missed you darling!”

Hearing the noise Petros mentally winced the last time he had been out and about he was caught by a professor and some chick he was a little less than excited to see. The women in this town were insane, and that was as nice as he could put it, he had been spilled on, ran into and gotten detention. To say he was unhappy would have been and understatement. The problem was Petros was not very good at letting things out, he usually would vent to Parker but after the death of his sister Parker had been rather absent. It was understandable; when Petros lost his mother he was less than social and knew that he needed time before he would be back to his old self once again. Shrugging it off he was thrilled when he heard the voice. It was Emma. Thank god!
He couldn’t have had better luck if the stars had aligned. He couldn’t remember what exactly had driven them to become friends but he imagined it had been one of the snarky comments made in a class they had together. They actually had several classes together and they had become a terrible twosome. Petros and Emma always sat with one another, they always said nasty things about others and it worked out well since they seemed to hate all of the same people. That and she made the best shopping companion he had encountered she was not afraid to tell him no and she had the same ability to spend money like it was water. A more perfect friend could not be found and Petros was grateful.
“Emma!” He felt her tight squeeze and he spun around to hug her. She always smelled so nice. It was one of those things Petros noticed. He was able to associate smells with people better than he could remember names. His father smelled of cigar smoke and leather, his brother smelled of the ocean Eudoxia was vanilla and sandalwood and Kora always smelled faintly of jasmine. His mother’s scent was one he missed; a mix of strawberries and roses. He had gone out and attempted to buy candles but he couldn’t bring himself to purchase those. “I’ve missed you where have you been hiding? My father, and my sister, the one I like, have been town. They have been driving me crazy, well sort of. They are in my personal space and wanting to do things.” He made a face and shuddered slightly.

Swatting a fly away from her, Emma realized how uncomfortable she was from the small beads of sweat that had formed on her forehead. She wiped them clear but desired a shower more than anything. Emma rarely did any outdoor activities for pure enjoyment. Anything that dealt with the possibility of ruining clothes or a chance of getting dirty or injured made her stray from it. Or at least it used to. Up until this past semester at school Emma was the Queen Bee in her circle of friends. The girls wanted to be with her and the guys wanted to be with her. She craved and loved the attention, but at times it did get annoying. And just as she was starting to question that lifestyle, she met Maddox and her outlook on life slowly started to change, except for a few key features that flowed through her blood.
One of those things was loyalty, especially to her friends. Petros was one of her closest and dearest friends. She loved everything about the kid and would go to the end of the world if he needed her to. They had met on one of the school outings to a local town as they were both checking out the latest in wizarding fashion. From then on it was fate, instant best friends if you will. Whenever one of them needed advice, they could count on an honest opinion from the other, especially when it came to looks. His appreciation for style made Emma love him that much more.
Besides just superficial advice, Petros also always had a shoulder and an ear reserved for Emma for whenever she needed one, and vice versa. Sometimes it felt as if he was the only one that understood her, especially with a notable family has his own. He knew the pressures that were often hanging over her head. But most importantly, he was the best friend that anyone could ever ask for, and that is why the minute she realized it was him standing before her, Emma was jumping for joy. “Doll face! I have missed you too! My evil mother has kept me locked up in the house and the only time I have been allowed out is either for some social event or going to the store with her to spend Daddy’s money. I kind of just left today, oh well. You know how she is…” Emma said, her voice trailing off as she rolled her eyes in disgust. “Wait? Your family is in town? Oh my goodness, I have to meet them! The infamous Eudoxia, the one you love with all your heart! Just teasing poppet, anyways tell me what they have done, what you all have done as one big happy family!”

He huffed his fake annoyance at her and smiled. Emma had annoyed him all of twin in their friendship and that blew over easily and was never brought up again. He figured it was all par for the course. He did however blush slightly as she teased him, he had gushed about his sister. It was one of those things he couldn’t help. “Yes.” He said a little sheepishly. “You can meet her, but I warn you, she is fabulous and perfect and you should see the way people look at her. I am fairly convinced she can get anything she wants with just a snap of her perfectly manicured fingers.” He shook his head, as many times as he had watched her play someone he still couldn’t believe how easy she made it look. “She took me shopping for some things for my dorm, she found it, well boring. They were out of whatever she wanted to get me, the comforter I think and she turned on the charm and the poor salesmen didn’t know what hit him, he was in back looking for another one and he found it. He even thanked her!” His tone had taken on that of incredulousness and he shook his head. Again he blushed. “I know I gush, but you have to understand she is the only one who recognizes me as a member of the Karras family.”
At this petros shrugged and shoved his hands in his pockets. “Besides it not so much her, she only got on to me about my detention and the fact I’ve been kicked out of most of my classes. She’s actually much better at the parental disappointment than she thinks. She’s a much more qualified parent than Atlas anyway.” Even saying his father’s name brought forth anger but Petros was not in the mood to dwell upon such things. “Well, she is leaving soon, maybe we can all get lunch, you guys would really like each other I think. She sort of says whatever she wants and gets away with it. Not to mention she dresses extremely well. I want her to meet my friends. Is that weird? That I want her so badly to me and like my friends.” He wasn’t sure what sort of kid that made him, most kids wanted their parents out of their life and he wanted nothing more than to be apart of the exclusive Karras club. He shrugged, he would let it go.
“What did your mother do this time to deserve your wrath Ems?” He knew well how deadly it could be standing in the way of Emma McKinsey, it was the equivalent of a violent suicide mission. There however was no martyrdom when the dust settled, you were lucky if anyone remembered you at all. It was another reason Petros loved her so much, she was incineration in patent leather heels and she smiled while you were reduced to ashes. It was all very amazing. He loved her dearly for everything, she was the epitome of best friend and he was lucky to have her on his side. It wouldn’t be pretty if the two of them were on the opposite side of a battle line, the casualties would number to great for the school to support them. “I don’t know how you have put up with her for so long, she would drive me crazy and then back again.”
